HR Groups in solidarity with victims of enforced disappearances and extra judicial killings

Balay Rehabilitation Center along with other human rights groups joined an annual Lenten gathering of families of victims of disappearances and other human rights violations entitled Kalbalyo ng Kawalan ng Katarungan (KKK) last April 12. This year’s theme Paghilom, Pagbangon, Pagkilos aims to highlight unity and solidarity among families of Desaparecidos with the families of victims of extrajudicial killings in their search for truth and justice.

Participants gathered outside the Bantayog ng mga Bayani to witness the reenactment of enforced disappearance, torture, and extrajudicial killing in front of photos of the disappeared and fallen victims of the war on drugs. The program was followed by a candle-lighting ceremony and community prayer organized by the Families of Victims of Involuntary Disappearances (FIND) and Asian Federation Against Involuntary Disappearances (AFAD).

According to FIND spokesperson Nilda Lagman, the activity intends to reach out to families of victims of extra judicial killings as they grieve on the unjust killing of their loved ones. She added that awareness raising and action in high-risk communities is necessary to address the issues of killings and disappearances. “Support and assistance are also needed towards their healing,” she said.
