The first issue introduces the Dialogos as the newest publication of Balay that deals on psychosocial praxis, peace and human rights. It is an occasional publication that carries thematic articles that cover topics on related to psychosocial thoughts and practice, as well as relevant articles on human rights and peace. It aspires to stimulate the creation of a new understanding and insights of those situations as it strives to contribute to make positive changes in the conditions where we exist.

It tackles three related articles that serve as a contribution to human rights discourse on the culture of peace. These are Human Rights as the Practice of “Pakikipagkapwa”; Human Rights and Peace Building; and A Case Study on Mediation and Reconciliation as a Practice of ‘Culture of Peace’.

Understanding Social Trauma and Community-Based Psychosocial Development Response
June 2008

The second issue on Understanding Social Trauma and Community-Based Psychosocial Development Response is basically a review of related literature that provides the background for understanding interrelated concepts of trauma and well-being in armed conflict and post-armed conflict settings. The first part presents concepts both in western and non-western perspectives and in Philippine context. The second part explains the dynamics of trauma and well-being in armed conflict situations, using the trauma and the well-being paradigms respectively.

Healing the Wounds of War
June 2008

The third issue publishes selected lectures which were presented in an exclusive forum organized by Balay Rehabilitation Center and the Research and Rehabilitation Center for Victims of Torture (RCT-Denmark) in 2005. The articles were selected based on proximate relevance to Filipino methods and approaches in psychosocial healing practices as well as on the significant current issues in rehabilitation and peace interventions in the Philippines.

Integrating Children’s Rights in Barangay Disaster Management and Development – A Trainors Manual

The Manual seeks to build the capacities of communities and local government officials in the seven conflict-affected barangays (Ginatilan, Nalapaan, Panicupan, Lagunde, Dalengaoen, Takepan and Kalakacan) in the Municipality of Pikit, Central Mindanao towards ensuring the protection of the rights and welfare of children during various phases of disaster situations and trying to ensure that the children’s need and concerns are considered and addressed prior to the disaster, during disaster and post-disaster situations. 2006.

In Search of Balms A Book forward to Healing

The book contains stories of survivors of torture and detention. This book is a humble attempt to capture in language and its symbols the survivor’s continuing effort to heal. It wants to impart a message of courage and hope. 2005.

Mindanao Young People’s Summit for Peace and Development (Building Bridges, Strengthening Solidarity)
Prepared by BALAY with support from UNICEF, FDF Copenhagen, Miserior and the Danish Church Aid (DCA) for its solidarity to Balay and facilitating the fund generation.

The Young People Summit was a gathering of peace of the youth representing the different youth organizations of Mindanao. This book is a by product of the summit. It contains how the summit was conceptualize, the youth’s activities and plans and the YPS Declaration which the youth commits to work together to enhance and widen the solidarity among the tri-people (Moro, Lumad and Settlers) towards attaining peace and Development in Mindanao. 2005.

The purpose of this primer is to draw attention to the IDP’s in the country not as a “collateral damage” in an armed conflict that is being waged in their name but as people endowed with human dignity, rights and capacities. This primer also intends a responsibility to the national authorities and other key actors to promote and protect the rights of the Internally Displaced Persons.

The Primer has translations in Cebuano, Filipino, Maguindanaon, Maranao, Sama and Tausug versions.

Bakwit Power: People’s Journey to Peace

This video showed the historic and the first ever collective action of the people to assert their rights for Peace. The Internally Displaced People troop to the streets in Pikit, Pagalungan and Datu Montawal calling the government to look after their issue and both the Government and the MILF to go back to the negotiating table. 2003. 10 minutes and 39 seconds. GINAPALADTAKA Spaces for Peace and Children as Zones of Peace

The video is about the declaration of the Spaces for Peace and Children as Zones of Peace in the 7 barangays of Pikit known as GiNaPaLaDTaKa (an acronym for the seven conflict affected areas who experienced the ravages of war). A momentous event, the presentation tells how it is being conceived, the series of activities conducted prior to the declaration and the effort of the local communities to declare their communities and their children as Space and Zones of Peace as their contribution to the greater concern for Peace. 2005. Bantay Ceasefire

The video features the investigative mission organized by the MPC (Mindanao People’s Caucus ) in July of 2003, five months after the armed conflict in Central Mindanao took place. The areas covered by the mission are Pikit, Pagalungan and Datu Montawal municipalities. The assessment includes the issue of security, Human Rights, Education, Livelihood and Public Health. 2003. Healing the Wounds of War

A film about the face of armed confrontations in Pikit, North Cotabato. in Mindanao. It is also the story of people who have learned the “art of evacuation” of their tremendous amount of resiliency, their ability to rise from being survivors of an unjust war. April, 2003. Produced by Balay Rehabilitation Center. Written and Directed by Joey R.B. Lozano. 20 minutes and 21 seconds.
